Look out for new label Scarlett – a collection of covetable silk dresses just perfect for your summer calendar: dinner with friends, art openings, dancing the night away in Ibiza… Behind the label is Pascale Landot, whose fashion pedigree is impeccable and includes many years with Paris designer Barbara Bui. Pascale is one of those girls who always gets it right and whose style I have secretly copied for years! And now we can all have a piece of Parisian chic right here in Ibiza: hotfoot it to Galeria Elefante in Sta. Gertrudis!

<img class="aligncenter wp-image-4947" title="GoodfriendsAre Stars" src="http://www.picnicundertheorangetree.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/GoodfriendsAre-Stars1.jpg" alt="" width="372" height="372"

I’ve been thinking a lot about friendships lately. Old friends, new friends. I feel incredibly blessed to have so many amazing friends spread all across the globe. I thrive on friendships. They make feel whole. They give my life value. Different friendships bring me different possibilities. With dear old friends there is that special connection to past memories. We bring up the same old stories and laugh like they just happened yesterday. New friends give life a new energy. It’s fun and fascinating to get to know peoples life stories and to share mine with someone who hasn’t already heard it before. (Did I ever tell you Bruce Springsteen had a nick name for me?) Some friends are party rockers, some are close confidantes. Some I don’t see enough of, some I see every day. Facebook, emails and Skype enable me to engage regularly with friends no matter where in the world they live.

My dear sweet Grandma Millie passed away one year ago, but her wisdom and insights stay with me. When I got married she advised me to make sure I still kept up with my girlfriends. She saw a few of her friends devote themselves so entirely to their new husband and children that they let their friendships go. “Stick with your girlfriends” she said, “they might be with you long after your husband dies and you’ll need each other later in life.” She and her girlfriends long outlived their husbands and she was still having a hoot with them many decades later. She and her very best friend who met when they were 5 both died within 2 days of each other, 88 years later.

I’ve been thinking lately too about friendships which have faded. Some have died a natural death as one of us changed jobs or moved away. Some are still there in the background, waiting for circumstances to bring us back together again. Or not.

For as long as I can remember I have always shied away from drama. I am a peace seeking missile! As early as 10 years old I have memories of being drawn into neighbourhood dramas with kids trying to get me to take sides and turning on me when I refused to. I am a real “2 sides to every story” kind of girl. Even if I don’t exactly agree with the other side, I respect that they are coming at it with their own perspective and in their mind they are right. For the most part I have been able to coast through life avoiding the most die-hard Drama Queens (and Kings) and tend to migrate towards a peaceful flock. Sure we all have our fair share of ups and downs, but my closest friends are not shit-stirrers. We don’t look for trouble and we certainly do our best not to create any. I love hanging with people who make each other feel good.

There have been been friendships in my life which have brought out the worst in me. I am not normally competitive, jealous, suspicious or gossipy, yet certain people have brought this out in me. I didn’t always feel like myself when I was with them. I didn’t always like myself when I was with them. The contrast was so great between how I felt when I was hanging with these friends and when I was spending time with “my peeps” – the ones who made me feel good. You might think. “Ok, easy – drop the ones who make you feel bad and hang with the ones who make you feel good”, but it’s not always that simple. Friendships can be complicated. They are often intertwined so deeply into our lives that it’s hard to get untangled. These friends can have good sides too and are unaware of the negative impact they have on you. The more drama-driven they are, the more self focussed they are.

Drama has an incredibly energy draining effect on those who don’t thrive on it. Energy Vampires suck the life out of you. Toxic friends can either stress you out, use you, are unreliable, are overly demanding, or don’t give anything back.

Have a think about it. Who is dimming your bright light?

I read somewhere that you are the average of the 5 people you are with. In spending time with positive and inspirational people, you’ll become an inspirational and positive force yourself.

Surround yourself with people who are supportive and loving. Friends who want the best for you. Friends who bring out the best in you. When you hang with people who make you feel good, you are a better person for it. When meeting new people, use your instincts. Vampires can only enter if we invite them in.

Choose PEACE not DRAMA. Be a good friend back. Cherish the relationships you have in your life which are good. Spend more time with them. Feel gratitude for them. Open yourself up to bringing fresh friendships into your life. My Girl Scout motto comes to mind… ”Make new friends, but keep the old. One is Silver and the other’s Gold.”

Why not forward this to a friend today?

There are a great many reasons to spend a few days in Spain’s third largest city: the spectacular modern architecture of the City of Arts and Sciences, the impressive Gothic and Baroque splendour of the Barrio del Carmen, the wide, newly spruced up stretch of Mediterranean beach or why not, the city’s glamorous sporting events such as America’s Cup and the Formula 1. To the list can now be added: Food! Valencia, of course, is most famous as the birth place of paella, and having sampled the Paella de Mariscos in one of Hemingway’s favourite haunts, Pepica, I can truly say that it was among the best I’ve ever had. But another typically Spanish delicacy, tapas, gets my vote as the meal of choice in Valencia. There are plenty of venues to choose from but there are two that I would recommend especially.

The first is a classic, Casa Montaña. A rustic space decked out with wine barrels and tiles, always teaming with locals and visitors alike, in the somewhat grotty port area. In addition to the usual fare of calamari, jamón ibérico, anchovies and patatas bravas, there’s an absolutely delicious dish of solomillo (fillet steak). The wine list is extensive too, this is a bodega after all, with over 1000 wines from all over the world as well as a good selection of bottles from the region.

We stumbled across the second, Cava Siglos, in the atmospheric historic quarter, the Barrio del Carmen. This restaurant would not be out of place in downtown Manhattan – a narrow, high ceilinged space with exposed brick walls and pipes, funky lighting and a huge, minimalist counter. The kitchen is open to view and they prepare some mouthwatering dishes – we loved the garlic mushrooms and the squid. Again the focus is as much on wine as on food and a hot tip is the local red “Pasión”, produced from the bobal grape.

It’s about time that Ibiza got its very own mascot – Formentera has the gecko but what does the White Isle have? The nearest thing to a symbol are the Pacha cherries. But Pacha is now a global brand and besides, Ibiza is so much more than just clubbing!

Poddy the Podenco is the brainchild of Bruno Lizot, a charismatic Frenchman who has made his home in Ibiza and started Blacklist, a property management and event business aimed at high end clients. Together with the cartoonist David Cantero, Bruno created Poddy and his group of friends including Taco, the rabbit, Miss Fina, the tortoise and Lalo, the DJ lizard. In a short time Poddy has created quite a stir with the movers and shakers of Ibiza – in addition to a dedicated exhibition at the hip b12gallery, you’ll be able to follow his adventures in the local paper the Diario and even have a boogie with four of the characters at Amnesia’s Matinee nights.

Podenco means hound in Spanish. A fitting choice, a podenco is a breed “considered by most experts one of the most ancient dog breeds. It is believed the Ibizan Hound evolves from the tesem, the ancient Egyptian hunting dog.” (source Wikipedia) Poddy is also a modern day hero in that he is passionate about safe guarding the natural beauty of Ibiza and protecting the environment. Go Poddy!
