Scoop or snog?

A myriad of ice-cream shops of the old-fashioned, genuine kind (think 50s retro styling and genuine Italian gelato) has cropped up all over the British capital. This is not the luxury ice-cream revolution led by Häagen Dazs et al. with equally silly names, but something more home spun and smaller on every scale. Scoop opened its first teeny shop in London’s Covent Garden a couple of years ago, and recently opened a second boutique in Soho. They describe their gelato as natural luxury and, judging by the queues outside, they’re onto a winner. Also in Soho there is Gelupo, the off-shoot of successful Italian eaterie, Boca di Lupo, serving up delicious Italian gelato to eager customers.
At the same time we have witnessed the return of frozen yogurt – there are various new venues around town but the one with the most memorable name has got to be Snog. Speculating whether this is a reflection of our recession ridden times (it’s a cheapish treat) and old enough to remember the last time yogurts came frozen (early 90s), I can only say “what goes around, comes around”. What is new, in keeping with our love of all things natural and locally produced, is that both ice-cream and yogurt merchants proclaim the health benefits and freshness of their wares. And I must say, it all does taste better this time around!
